Competency Monitoring

Competency Monitoring is the periodic re-confirmation that somebody is still competent at an

activity. Authorization is not permanent; ISO/IEC 17025 §6.2.5(f) asks for ongoing monitoring, not

one training once.

Menu path: ISO 17025 → Personnel & Competency → Competency Monitoring.

Connects to

  • User Competencies — the parent of every entry.
  • Proficiency Testing — the "witnessed PT" method ties competency to real external QC rather

than to an opinion.

  • Internal Audits — the "internal audit" method does the same through the audit programme.
  • Personnel audit pack — entries go into that person's file.

If this is missing

  • 🔴 The dangerous gap is not the missing page, it is the stale entry. An authorization granted

three years ago and never re-checked looks active in the system and is indefensible under audit.

  • A suspension recommended result that is recorded but not followed by a change to the

competency's status leaves that person still signing off work. Recording it here does not

change the authorization by itself.

  • With no score on a method that produces one, you lose the only objective comparison between

successive monitoring events.
