Control Series

The Control Series screen tracks the stability of your quality-control measurements with Levey-Jennings charts and Westgard rules (ISO/IEC 17025 §7.7.1). A control series groups the successive measurements of a control sample for a combination of instrument, method, element, and lot.

How it works

  • Warm-up phase: the first measurements are gathered without any rules applied. After at least 20 measurements, a user with Control Series management rights (Lab Director, Quality Manager, or Reviewer) can lock the series from its row in the table, which calculates and freezes the mean and standard deviation. The same user can trigger a Recalculate, which re-runs the Westgard evaluation over every measurement in the series.
  • Monitoring: once a series is locked, each new measurement is evaluated against the ±2 and ±3 standard-deviation (z-score) limits around the frozen mean.
  • Westgard rules: a single measurement is flagged Warning if it alone exceeds 2 standard deviations (1_2s — a screening check, it does not by itself reject the run). It is flagged Out of control if it exceeds 3 standard deviations (1_3s), if two successive measurements are on the same side beyond 2 deviations (2_2s), or if the range between two successive measurements exceeds 4 deviations (R_4s).
  • Clicking a series opens its detail page with the Levey-Jennings chart, the measurement history, the violations, and the linked deviations.

Notes

  • The series record itself only moves through Warming up (before locking) and Locked (after locking). The In control and Out of control labels describe the outcome of the Westgard evaluation for each individual measurement after locking, not a state the series as a whole reaches.
  • When a measurement comes back Out of control (1_3s, 2_2s, or R_4s), a Deviation is created automatically, linked to the series, and the alert counter in the menu increases. A plain Warning (1_2s) does not automatically create a deviation.
  • From the series' detail page you can see the measurement history, the violations, and the linked deviations, so corrective action can begin.
